Corey Lien, a seasoned serial entrepreneur opens the speech by questioning the audience of differences between traditional business and social enterprises. He points out that business corporations and social enterprises both share value creation and provide affordable products/services with effective business models. However most social enterprises originated from NPO oftentimes lack of business mindset to make the social organization run effectively. The conventional business system focuses on purely profit-making from scale of economy and self-interest causing social issues that could have an impact on the well-being of human beings with externalities, such as air pollution, climate change and inequalities.
Through brainstorming, Corey guided the audience for a business mindset of tackling the social issues versus a purely profit making mindset leading to distinctive business trajectories. Corey shares the speech of Danone’s CEO, Antoine de Saint Affrique World Dairy Summit in Paris addressing the pressing issue of malnutrition and food and shortages and famines to raise the corporate awareness and share the case of Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation.
He encouraged the audience to reflect on the existing business system and think from the social entrepreneurship perspective on the potential outcome of business activities and what can be changed for the better to balance the personal and public interests.
